Hurricane Sandy knocked out power for millions of people for up to two weeks. But DC Group, a Northeast Minneapolis provider of uninterruptible power supply, got businesses and key facilities operational in a few hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to get clients up and running very quickly,\u201d said DC Group Field Engineer Rameshchandra Tiwari. \u201cIt was a top priority to work with facilities like the Water Authority so that clean water was available, and we were proud to be able to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Microsoft, IBM, the FBI, and the U.S. Navy and others rely on DC Group to ensure that they never lose power for critical operations. After Sandy, many others also tapped DC Group for emergency assistance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of uninterruptible power supply providers just shut down their call centers,\u201d company founder and President Jon Frank said. \u201cMost did not have the experience or capacity for this kind of disaster, or they were in the affected area. We were prepared to go in immediately and get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

DC Group obtained emergency responder status and had permission to enter closed roads and disaster areas. \u201cMost of the time I was the only one on the road,\u201d Tiwari said. \u201cThrough our experience with similar disasters we knew we needed our infrastructure and parts ready, and our people in position.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the ground, workers had to improvise to complete their missions. \u201cAt one point a field engineer had to drive to Pennsylvania to pick up gas for another engineer so he could get to a customer,\u201d said Cameron Schneider, DC Group\u2019s field coordinator for the region. There were other challenges as well, \u201cMany of our engineers were at home without power, but hopped in their trucks to get power online for clients,\u201d Schneider said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur people did a great job under tough circumstances,\u201d said Jon Frank, \u201cBut this is what we do and we were ready. We\u2019ll be ready for the next one, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Springer, Facility Manager for Harrah\u2019s Casino in Atlantic City, agrees. \u201cPeople don\u2019t realize this but for many of us, power at work was the only power we had. First, our field service engineers (FSEs) are full employees, not contractors, and we have hired for a very high level of expertise in our FSE staff\u2014we have more OEM and military experience in our fleet of field service engineers than any other independent service provider. Being employees means that our FSEs have full support and ongoing training at our state-of-the-art training facility. It also means they\u2019re accountable to a boss.<\/p>

We have FSEs in almost every major city, which has cut our average response time in major metro areas to a half hour (our average response time overall holds steady at 2.35 hours). Along with our FSEs, we have strategically located parts hubs. Having the correct parts on hand is crucial to resolving issues quickly, so we keep those parts hubs supplied with OEM-discontinued and rare components as well as the most commonly used and in-demand parts. Additionally, we have two main warehouse locations that manage critical power components inventory and keep everyone stocked up.<\/p>
